Turning the page of time

Monday, December 31st, 2007

Today is that one day in a year when we turn the imaginary page of time…page 2007 in the ‘book of life and the world’ has almost been written, all experiences of the past year are in it.

Good to know that they are stored in a safe place, our memories…one can always look back, read and learn.

Writing things down and then turning the page mainly means that things can be put to rest…it’s time to go on and look to the future, something which comes automatically if you start to live your life now, in the present…

01.02.2008; end of a browser era

Saturday, December 29th, 2007

TechCrunch: "A Sad Milestone: AOL To Discontinue Netscape Browser Development… …Please observe a moment of silence for the Netscape browser. Netscape Navigator, the browser that launched the commercial Internet in October 1994, will die on February 1, 2008.".

I remember my first browsing steps in 1993 into that new thing called the ‘world wide web’…I was using the Mosaic, a browser developed at the NCSA (National Center for Supercomputing Applications) by a team lead by Marc Andreessen, who is indeed, the co-founder of Netscape Communications. Netscape became the browser of choice, it marks the start of the growing world wide web era.

Browsing in those days was reserved for a limited group of people, which made it something special…Netscape represents that period in my life, it certainly has an emotional value for me.

Microsoft killed the Netscape browser by integrating its own IE browser (yes, the Internet Exploder Explorer) with its operating system. Despite AOL purchasing Netscape Communications in 1998, the browser lost traction…its spin-off Mozilla Firefox even replaced Netscape’s earlier position as #2.

The last best news out of Netscape camp was Jason Calacanis’ effort as Netscape CEO to make it THE social news website of choice. Things seemed to improve and Netscape gained traction as portal…however, after Jason quit AOL last year, it became clear that without his vision, CEO 2.0 leadership and energy the end was near…

Second Christmas day (aka Boxing Day) turned out to be Second Skiing day! 🙂

We went to Tryvann, close to the Holmenkollen ski jump…the 10cm fresh snow from last night made conditions perfect for boarding!

Also got my season pass, so I can ski or board anytime I like…hang loose!!

Anyway, just wanted to say: God Jul, Prettige Kerstdagen & Merry Xmas y’all!!

Apparently there is…one!

Migrate raymondpoort.com domain, part 2

Monday, December 17th, 2007

As mentioned earlier, I cancelled the contract for my .com domain and will migrate to (most likely) GoDaddy. This means I’ve got some work to do to prep things and try to keep downtime as low as possible by the time the domain will be migrated. This will probably be early January, certainly before the 12th, when the current contract expires!

House ready for renting out!

Sunday, December 16th, 2007

We’ve done a lot of work this weekend, prepping the house for renting out from January. Thanks to everyone helping us out…I love you, I love you, I love you!

We moved out our belongings, painted all walls of the bedrooms and put a laminate floor in the same rooms, making them look absolutely GREAT! It was a nice family job; did it together with my father, brother and brother in law…quite a team!

Just finished cleaning the entire house, we’re good to go!

Cross fingers that the Big Brother IT partner here doesn’t find out! 🙂

Facebook messages

Thursday, December 13th, 2007

A requested and more than welcome change in Facebooks messaging policy:

Somewhere last week they start sending the standard email, notifying you of a new Facebook message INCLUDING the message contents!

Before you only got the notification and had to login to your Facebook account to actually read the message. Now you can see the whole message and only have to login incase you want/need to respond.

Hmm, the next step? Being able to respond to the message by replying directly from the notification email! Guess that won’t happen, since Facebook would loose too many page views that way, or?
