Follow the money

Monday, October 8th, 2007

A latest topic of discussion in Adam Curry‘s DSC; ‘follow the money’.

I like these kind of simple taglines to catch a difficult multi-angular topic…’follow the money’ and find out where our leaders will take us in the (near) future! (and therefore, what our future will look like!)

The discussion in the Daily Source Code (actually nowadays more a ‘Twice-a-week’ Source Code :)) was inspired by the ZeitGeist movie (again…check it out!). It will be interesting to see where this discussion is heading to.

My contribution; check out Opensecrets.org – money in politics data.

According to the ‘Who We Are‘: ‘The Center for Responsive Politics is a non-partisan, non-profit research
group based in Washington, D.C. that tracks money in politics, and its
effect on elections and public policy. The Center conducts computer-based
research on campaign finance issues for the news media, academics,
activists, and the public at large. The Center’s work is aimed at creating
a more educated voter, an involved citizenry, and a more responsive
government.’

It’s still all pretty U.S. oriented and should move to a more global standpoint, especially looking at the current shift in economic powers (have you been following the Euro/Dollar trend, crazy! And what about China/India?)

Today is World Animal Day…a day to celibrate harmony between humans and animals (uhh…aren’t we all animals?!?)…October 4 was chosen since it is the feast Day of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.

So, do something special today for the animals in your life!

Too late for Spice

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

BBC News: "London’s Spice Girls reunion concert has sold out in 38 seconds after fans were notified tickets had gone on sale"

Mac or PC?

Sunday, September 30th, 2007

Most of you know my addiction to everything Apple/Mac related (coming close to an Apple Evangelist :)), a dedicated MacCast listener and happy iPod & Mac mini owner (saving for that 17″ MacBook Pro :)).

I love Apple’s Get a Mac ads, they ARE hilarious…take some time and watch them all!

Mac or PC?

People even rap about it:

Word of the weekend

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

The word for this weekend:

Gulrotkake

(also known as carrot cake)

ENJOY!

Thinkers

Friday, September 28th, 2007

Food for thought:

1% of the population thinks, 2% of the population think that they think, the other 97% of the population would rather die than think!

Hmm, think about this…that is, if you’re in that 1%! 🙂

House converted into a mobile home

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

Yahoo News: “A man angry that he wasn’t going to be sold a house is accused of using a power saw to turn the abode into a convertible.” Check out the video:

Microsoft/Google to buy in on Facebook

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

Wall Street Journal: "Microsoft is in talks to buy a minority stake in the popular
social-networking Web site Facebook Inc., a sign of a new urgency by
the software giant to jump-start its online business…But Microsoft must first outgun Google, which has also expressed strong
interest in a Facebook stake, according to people familiar with the
matter."

Hmm, this was in the news yesterday…I never realized the impact it would have when I decided to join Facebook last weekend…:)

Testing Facebook & Hyves

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

I decided to do a little test with the social networks I recently joined, Facebook and Hyves.

Main idea is to find out how well the networking (spreading) part in social networks really works when one takes a one-sided approach. I know many people on both platforms, so it will be interesting to see how my friendslist progresses while I won’t add anyone, but instead will wait for them to find and add me.

I do realize that mentioning me joining both networks on my blog has alerted some people, so the test is not perfect…then again, one should start somewhere, right? 🙂

Current count is 1 friend on Facebook and 4 friends on Hyves…let’s keep this test rolling for a week or two! 🙂

(ow, I’ve got 15 followers on twitter at the moment)

ZeitGeist, a must see!

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

I watched the ZeitGeist movie yesterday…have to admit, it was much more revealing than I expected, a bit US oriented, but certainly red pill stuff!

Conclusion: the ZeitGeist movie is a must-see for everyone…watch it directly from the ZeitGeist site, download the DivX version (torrent, english subtitles) or order the DVD!

OneWebDay, Facebook & Hyves

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

Actually…I should spend the rest of the day surfing the net instead of watching movies…why?

Today is OnewebDay, the day on which we celebrate the Web and what it does for each of us.

From their site: ‘It’s easy to take the web for granted. But it’s worth taking a moment
to reflect on what the web could mean to humankind in the future.
That’s the purpose of OneWebDay, held each September 22.’

The mission of OneWebDay is to create, maintain, advance and promote a global day to celebrate online life.

As a result, I (finally :)) signed up for Facebook and Hyves…having September 22 as the join-date is more than a bonus! 🙂

Probably more social networks will follow (Pownce, LinkedIn), but I’m hesitating a bit…more about the ‘zoo of social networks’ in a later blogpost.

The ZeitGeist movie

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

A recommendation from Adam Curry in his latest Daily Source Code (DSC #665, closing in to evil #666!);

ZeitGeist the movie!

From their statement: ‘Zeitgeist was created as a non-profit filmiac expression to inspire people
to start looking at the world from a more critical perspective and to understand that very often things are not what the population at large think they are.’

Yeah, this will be an interesting thing to watch tonight…ow, besides this I’m also planning to watch Transformers…nice combination, eh? 🙂

Fall – new opportunities

Friday, September 21st, 2007

Fall has started today, anxious to find out what this season will bring.

Besides the change in weather (a bit more a dutch winter feeling to it I assume), also a change in my work environment. A (needed and promising) restructuring will take place and my current position is not (yet?) listed on the organizational diagram…am very positive since new opportunities are on the horizon, exciting!

House for rent

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

While Kissy has been in NL this week, we had the first possible renters visitting our house there. Exciting…hope to hear more this week! In a way it will complete the move to Norway.

Anyone looking for a house in the area of The Hague can contact me! 🙂

What’s on your Mint? :)

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

TechCrunch40, a conference in which forty of the hottest new startups from around the world are given the chance to announce and demo their products is done and over.

The best presenting company (receiving $50,000 as part of the award) has been chosen…and the winner is: Mint.

Mint
is a personal finance application that lets users track and monitor
their financial information in one place without the need of routine
maintenance or accounting knowledge. It tracks bank, credit union and
credit card transactions and alerts users to upcoming bills, low
balances or unusual spending.

Added to this Mint constantly searches through thousands of offers from hundreds of
providers to find the best deals on everything from bank accounts to
credit cards; cable, phone and Internet plans, and more.

FINALLY the time consuming task of product comparison will be done for you! 🙂

This all looks to be very promising, and has the potential of changing the landscape, the way people organize their personal cashflow.

Pity the service is currently working only with US financial institutions (3,500 of them)…:(
