Diving in Bonaire

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

It’s Diving Thursday today! πŸ˜‰
Pretty exciting since this is the first time that we’re diving without a dive master! So far so good…actually, diving can’t get any easier than here in Bonaire; most of the dive spots can be reach from the shore, so no boating needed and there’s no current at all, easy for practising neutral boyancy! πŸ˜‰
The first two dives were well over an hour at appr. 60ft (20m), and there is still room for one more dive, yay! We didn’t rent an underwater camera this time, so unfortunately no spectacular pictures as last year…oh well, there’re all in my head anyway!

a new iPhone!

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Yay, I got the confirmation that my new iPhone (3GS, 32Gb, Black) is waiting for me in the office! Hehe, I can’t wait to start playing with it, yet I am NOT gonna come back one single day sooner…life’s way to good here, although it’s nice to have something to look forward to when coming home! (besides the cold weather, even snow and the electricity in the house that is apparently unstable, according to the neighbors…?!?)

Btw. I found a fix for my old iPhone’s Ringer/Silent switch problem (at least, a fix was posted as a comment on my blogpost)…hehe, I KNEW that a software fix could do it! I’ll give it a try when I’m back home.

Washington Slagbaai NP

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

The only National Park on Bonaire, Washington Slagbaai NP, has some nice points of interests, but is mostly known for it’s wide variety of cacti (that’s plural for cactus, I had to look it up myself ;))…it is FULL of cacti! πŸ˜‰
We took some meat and shrimps with us and made ourselves a yummie BBQ lunch, shot some flamingos on the way back (well, shot photos of them that is ;)) and concluded that we’ve had yet another great day on Bonaire!

A celebration on Klein Bonaire

Monday, November 9th, 2009

We went to Klein Bonaire (‘Little Bonaire’) today, a small island just out the west coast of Bonaire, 20 minutes with the watertaxi. There is not too much to see on the island itself, but the waters around it are packed with dive- and snorkling spots. It turned out to be the perfect place to celebrate our 19th anniversary (!): quiet, sunny (of course!), refreshing and beautiful while snorkling…perfect!! πŸ˜‰

Shitheads stealing towels

Sunday, November 8th, 2009

Vvrrrrr, the day started as any other; we were getting ready for another day at the beach, packed some food and drinks, went to grab the beach towels from the line next to the house where we left them to dry yesterday…uuhhh, well, the beach towels are gone!! Some shithead(s) probably thought they were the coolest beach towels on the island and decided to steal them!!! I ask you…beach towels…so sad, come on!! It has nothing to do with the value of a friggin’ beach towel, I just can’t stand ‘people’ (loosers!) who show no respect for other people’s properties…fuckfaces!

UPDATE: we just found out that the looser(s) also took the anti-mosquito candle from the table outside, jeez…it almost feels like a game of nagging the tourist. πŸ™

Sal the lizzard

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

Lizzards are often seen around houses here in Bonaire (yes, the climate is THAT nice! ;)). Our bungalow is no exception and there are at least four lizzards that seem to live here more or less permanent, we named them; Mac, Sal, Mandy and Liz…pretty straightforward names if you know the dutch word for lizzard; ‘salamander’. πŸ˜‰
Today I’d like to introduce Sal the lizzard; roughly 30cm long (including his half green tail), pretty curious and unlike most lizzards, not afraid of humans. I guess some previous renters have fed him, and in the process converted him to a pet rather than a ‘wild’ animal living on instinct…pity.
We don’t, so Sal needs to fall back on his roots these weeks and find his own ants. πŸ˜‰

Vacation-reading-list

Friday, November 6th, 2009

Vacation is for me typically the time to read, a hobby that I adore but don’t do too much ‘back home’. πŸ™
My vacation-reading-list consists of Dan Brown’s ‘The Lost Symbol’ and Stieg Larsson’s ‘Men who hate Woman’. Both are of the ‘lighter’ type of books (content wise, not weight wise as each of them are 500+ pages! ;)), so no deep philosophical or esoteric books this time.
I’m ahead of schedule as I finished Dan Brown last Wednesday and am halfway Stieg Larsson already. I have to find some more books as the November copy of Macworld won’t keep me reading for a full week! πŸ˜‰
Any recommendations?

Sorobon Beach

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

On the East coast of Bonaire, in Lac Bay, you’ll find Sorobon beach…not a bad place to be, eh? πŸ˜‰

No internet and Birkebeiner 2010

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

Many things were considered and taken into account account when we booked the bungalow; availability of internet was however overlooked (which will never happen again ;)) and, there is NO Internet in the house, aahhhh! Luckily it wasn’t hard to find an open accesspoint (THX toΒ  a close by computershop!!). Hehe, we are not that far off in creating a new daily routine; parking the car next to the shop, opening the laptops, zipping on a coffee/tea and checking emails, uploading blogposts, etc. πŸ˜‰
The non-availability of internet in da bungalow AND the 5hours time difference made me miss the sign-up for coming years Birkebeinerrittet 2010 which opened today at 09:00h, Norway time. Although I doubt if I would have been able to get in at all; all places were gone in 41 seconds, a new record!! With 16,500 people competing it’s quite a popular mountainbike race, eh? Oh well, I still have two options to enter once again: either I use my NL-address to get a ‘foreigner’-ticket, or I buy a ticket on the net in the weeks before the race (like I did the last two years)…I’ll find my way in, be sure that I won’t miss it! πŸ˜‰

First day after the first night

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

I managed to sleep through the first night without having the typical jetlag phenomenon of waking up at 3am and no longer being able to sleep…so I got quite a good rest, a terrific start! πŸ˜‰
Today is beach exploration day; Bonaire is packed with great snorkling spots and since we rented a pick-up for the coming two weeks, the island is ours, vrrrooommm!

Waking up in sunny Bonaire

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

It was quite a flight, not too much sleep since I am just too tall to sit comfortably (I prefer to say that the leg space is too little though ;)).
Oh well, we made it to Bonaire! We woke up in bright sunshine and only then got a good impression of the cute little bungalow that will be our home for the coming two weeks! πŸ˜‰

Bunny, bunny, rabbit, rabbit

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

It’s the first of the month and the bunnies will give me luck! (such as sunny weather in Bonaire ;))

Winter preparations and a Birthday dinner

Friday, October 30th, 2009

My first vacation days have been filled with all sorts of winter preparations as we’ll probably have snow when we come back from Bonaire! πŸ˜‰ So, the car has its winter tires now and I chopped enough wood to keep ourselves warm until April!

The rest of today we’ve been busy with other preparations; those needed for a splendid dinner with friends. The occasion is Kissy’s Birthday (again! ;)) and the menu looks ΓΌber-yummie…pre-dinner drinks start at 7pm, so…I’m OUT! πŸ˜‰

Str8ts

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

I’m hooked on a game called Str8ts, which I’m playing on my iPhone (Str8ts Lite from the App Store). The game is supposed to be the new rival to Sudoku since it has all the same qualities as Sudoku: easy to learn, addictive, exciting, great learning curve, compact in design, great newspaper presence and no math skills required.

Try it yourself, there’s a daily Str8ts puzzle waiting to be solved!

Vacation!!

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Yesssss…my (3 week!) vacation has started!!

Although I will work a little in the coming days finalize some last bits and pieces, I expect no problem to smoothly move into holiday mode. We’ll be leaving Sunday to this year’s exotic destination: the sunny island Bonaire, part of the Netherlands Antilles. It is world renowned for its excellent scuba diving and is rated among the best diving locations in the world and also recognized as one of the best destinations for snorkeling…what else do you want? YAY!

Hehe, I hope to at least match last years diving experience in Bali! πŸ˜‰

Train to work

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

I took the train to work today; my first time, at least from the new house and probably the last time as well! Jeez, what are the odds…the train I planned to take got cancelled, leaving me literally standing in the cold for 45 minutes! Aahhhh!

And taking the train ain’t all that straightforward anyway since I have to be driven to the trainstation. Besides that, the minimum time to get to work (door-to-door) is at least twice as long as driving my car (including some traffic).

Taking the train; definitely a no-no!

Kissy’s Birthday

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Happy Birthday sweetie!

My baby turned 35 today and according to her this is gonna be HER year…I believe it will be! πŸ˜‰

A typical ‘little bit of everything’ Sunday

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

Ain’t that typical for a rainy Sunday; doing a little bit of this and a little bit of that inside the house? And it’s Sunday, a typical Sunday, so not much could be finished because of various challenges (tools not functioning, not having all material available, etc.)…oh well, it’s soon Monday, start of another week with more luck…I’m pretty sure about that since I will start three weeks vacation on Thursday! πŸ˜‰

New Apple ‘Get a Mac’ ads target Windows 7

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

Apple posted three new ‘Get a Mac‘ advertisements specifically targeting Microsoft’s new OS, Windows 7, which was released last Thursday.

I must admit, I do feel a bit sorry for Microsoft (a tinytiny bit ;)) since I believe Win7 is their best OS so far. Then again; it *is* pretty much old-school when you have to *manually* move your files from one computer to another if you’re upgrading from WinXP (like the majority of people will). Apple’s upgrade experience has been pretty much seamless since Mac OS X Tiger, released in 2005!

As always, the ads are right on and funny.

Check ‘m out! (the originals are here, here and here)

Making money from podcasting

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

It’s about 5 years ago that podcasting was introduced to a wider public, the movement at the time was lead by Adam Curry and Dave Winer. Around the same time Adam co-founded Podshow (now called Mevio), a digital media entertainment network aimed to help people publish and market their podcasts, and to help listeners find podcasts that suit their interests.

In the Youtube clip below, Adam Curry explains how the Mevio model works and how it enables people to make money from podcasting.
